Yeah, they probably are a bit off-topic. I just love to see affordable, insanely high performance cars. I could reproduce that BMW in my garage, and that's way more realistic and potentially rewarding to me than buying an $80-100k car. I figured others might dig it too. Vorshlag.com sells a kit to install an LSX motor into an E36 for a few grand - it's a solid deal. The headers alone are worth most of the price.

I've been following the development of their "alpha" and "beta" cars for quite a while, and one of the original goals was to beat the WRX and Evo "boost buggies" at time trial and AutoX events. They're claiming 1.5g of sustained lateral grip, 500 wheel horsepower with an inlet restrictor, a 2000lb curb weight and 9 second quarter mile times.

For under $30k. It's worth a very close look if you want a truly fast car.

Is that still in development? The forums last LS1 posts were in Jan 2008...

I ask because I have an e36 M3 sitting under a car cover in my garage...and this sounds like a project it should undergo

Yeah dude, you can buy most of it here: http://www.vorshlag.com/index.php?cP...9d50c92c3b5c30

They're still planning on coming out with a custom rear subframe (potentially with a Mustang 8.8" differential) and a more thorough wiring solution, but they sell pretty much everything you need to get the drivetrain seated.

Both cars are under active development, too. Check out their forum.

An inlet restrictor is pretty ambiguous when you're not talking size of turbo and amount of boost. I really dont know why thats italicized like its amazing or something. 500hp is 500hp, whatever.

I don't know why you would waste time and money building a kit car that could beat the evo and rex. Again, anything purpose built will deliver. The fact that someone has to build a car to compete with factory 4 doors is a testament to how bad ass the ricer burners are. If it were me, I'd rather own one, turn the best time at the track, and prove that I am the superior driver rather than builder. Different strokes for different folks!

It's italicized because the engine is naturally aspirated. There is no turbo and there is no boost, but it still puts 500 horsepower to the wheels with an inlet restrictor. It's pretty amazing.

I'm not talking about anything close to stock. I'm talking about older Evos and WRXs that weigh in at around 1800lbs with 400+hp. They have to take on ballast and tire size penalties just to compete. The E36 is very competitive against stock Evos and WRXs, though - just not in the faster classes.

It's very expensive to get a reliable 9 second turbocharged AWD car. Find me a race car of that caliber can be reproduced for under $60k and I'll sing it's praises right along with you.

Should it be called an inlet restrictor then? I was always under the impression an inlet restrictor was called that because it sat at the inlet of a turbo. Where does it sit on an N/A car, pre throttle body I presume? I have no clue why you would want to restrict airflow, unless its too meet some dumb guideline from a racing organization.

Reliable racecar is an oxymoron btw...

yes just like neckcar's restrictor plates, when running the super speedways to reduce HP im assuming this is the same.

im thinking they would put it between the throttle body and the intake manifold as it would take more time to install/remove it there as to pre throttle body. this way here im guessing that you need to have one if your car is over X HP, just like the AWD cars with little weight in them need balast to equal out the field. theres probably a few things the sactioning body takes into count. HP, wieght, drive train (FWD,AWD,RWD)
