Not sure if it is remotely unique in this little corner of the interweb cosmos, but I've found I now steal damn near every sort of media possible. Music, movies, books, porno, and even fucking comic books. There are whole groups of cool cats who scan comics monthly (digital comic preservation or DCP) and post them for our bitch-asses. I do try to even out karma by hitting the local store and buying a pile of shit periodically - but I read far more electronically than I buy (so I guess I'm going to hell, and what'not).

(Edit: note that the index below hasn't been updated beyond around the half-way point of the thread - but has been left as many of the big bundles are listed below. Use the 'Search this thread' function to look around...)

Here are the first five issues of "The Boys" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boys_%28comic_book%29) - a newish comic written by Garth Ennis - who is a great writer. Although he's written a ton, including the most recent Punisher (Max) series and, of course, Preacher - I think Garth is just fine-tuning his work now.

You and me just became buds.

I fucking LOVE that goddamn comic. By the way, issue 6 is out and DC cancelled it after that due to content.

They're supposedly shopping it around to find a new publisher and DC is being cool about it and letting them so it should continue at some point hopefully in the next few months.

I just BT'd the entire Civil War series and the different monthly titles.

Its my secret shame.

And I cant wait for World War Hulk--even though I hate marvel.

I'll post #6 in a bit if people are interested... the normal theory is that the gerbil bit caused havoc with the execs. Also, if you're not aware - the series did indeed get picked up by another publisher. I'll dig up the link if you're interested, but we'll have The Boys back in short order (thank god).

Holy fuck, no I didn't know it got picked up already. I figured it would, it was supposedly selling well.

That's damn good news. I rarely follow ANY comic but this one has my full attention.

FYI if you're curious - http://www.wizarduniverse.com/magazine/wizard/003380728.cfm

I'm not familiar with Dynamite (the new publisher), but so long as they land somewhere, I'm happy. No word on the date for the next issue, hopefully it won't turn into a "just another month" scenario.

Digital is great, no doubt. But sometimes, I just gotta buy it on paper. I just picked up The watchmen series (again) and a hardcover copy of 300. old habits die hard.
Thanks for the cdi-display link.

300 was a must-buy (I also got it in hardcover) - as is anything that uses double-page spreads extensively (Ellis's Authority run is a good example). I still buy paper, but for me it is more about avoiding clutter/junk as opposed to saving money.

Frighteningly, it looks like this series is being addressed by DCP's archive folks (folks that scan old comics for preservation purposes). Looks like they've scanned 1 through 8 (it went to 12, not counting the Showcase prequels or some posthumous cameos).

I put in a request for someone to transfer them to me just now, I'll upload them so you can walk down memory lane if I can get them. Or is it "hitler-polka" down memory lane? They look funny... early parody work from one of the pencilers of mad magazine.

(I had never heard of them prior to this, here is their wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inferior_Five and toonpedia page: http://www.toonopedia.com/inferior.htm).

I didn't even realize it was a stand-alone title, I thought he was only in the Heavy Metal books... (for anyone curious, search for "ranXerox" - the name changed once xerox sued... lol) I'll have to try and find some of these (I suspect they were more popular on your side of the pond).

I always wondered if the entire Rank Xerox business (not the comic) was a joke in and of itself (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rank_Xerox). It just looks like an April fool's prank done by a brit - and Modi Xerox seemed funny too ("modi" is the norse god of wrath).

Here is another comic by Garth Ennis, called "303". It is about a Russian special forces old, who... kicks some ass and what'not. The title refers to the British enfield 303 rifle, and part of the books spend a bit of time talking about the history of the rifle as well as the special relationship between operators during some of those periods (particularly sas and various russian hardcases, and also the mujahs, etc - which definitely had a special respect for each other back in the day - mainly due to the obscenely high number of hours they'd logged).

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ADCHWQ1F

The zip file includes issues .5 to 6 (.5 is an introduction - the other six issues are the full run of the mini-series).

Meh, it is what it is.

If Sully is the protector of Anon, then my destiny on this board is ungood. I actually think anon has an intelligence higher than the average rat when he drops (rarely/almost-never) his "casual troll" thing, but if he is in character - then I plan on throwing cheap shots when I remember to. I am all for people playing characters on the innerwebs, but the casual troll thing deserves a "casual flame" right back... I thought that was the natural order of things.

Well, hope we find you soon on the outside, you stupid poof.

Well... thanks?

Anyway, here is another download for y'all:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2JY1IH3X

We3
(From wiki) The story follows the journey of We3, a squad of three prototype "animal weapons," as they flee captivity. Following the decision to terminate them in preparation for expanding the project of which they are a part, their escape is engineered by their trainer. The group consists of a dog, "Bandit" a.k.a. "1", a cat, "Tinker" a.k.a. "2", and a rabbit, "Pirate" a.k.a. "3", who were all kidnapped from a nearby city and encased in robotic armor.
----

This is a cool one, and is written by Grant Morrison, who is the second of 7 writers we shall be highlighting over my stay in tardland. Grant is another of the "british invasion" of comic authors, who pretty much made comics readable by someone other than 14-yr old male retards (now we are up to 15 or so... but more tolerant of puns).

The artist's (Quitely) panel layout is very well done, and introduces some styles that have not been well executed in the past. And Morrison somehow managed pretty in-depth characterization in a 3 issue series that involved very little dialog. This one is a favorite by critics, animal rights groups, and folks who love them some violence... which is a group that tends to disagree as a rule.

Warren Ellis is the third, and possibly my favorite, writer to be shown in this thread. He's done a wide variety of work, and is (outside of comics) very interested in futurist-type concepts. He also has a very prolific web presence with several forums targeting mind-bending topics, including one that is monkey themed... http://diepunyhumans.com/

Scars - 1 through 6 of 6
A short series about a detective going through a tough investigation. Ellis is very effective at showing the main character's transformation in terms of attitude and ethics - especially for a such a short series. If you like cop shows like the Shield or the Wire, you'll like Scars.

So by request of Flappo for some hitler and/or nazi comics, here ya go:

The first one is a gimme, one of the best graphic novels ever made period, and certainly the best ever made on this topic.

Maus: A Survivor's Tale - by Art Spiegelman
This is a actually a memoir or biography of the writer's father (and his time during the holocaust) combined with some more modern-day discussions on both the relationship between he and his father (and the effects of that kind of history on the entire family). Won a special pulitzer, they couldn't classify it - so just issued him one anyway.

You can download it from bittorrent: http://www.mininova.org/tor/557522
Or buy it at any bookstore. It is worth a purchase, and worthy of a spot on any bookshelf. If anyone wants to preview it but doesn't use bittorrent, let me know and I'll put it on megaupload.

For part 2 of our hitler/nazi comic extravaganza - I dug up a piece whose origins I am not 100% sure of. I do know it was originally published in russian, but the source is unknown. Although I assume it is a satire of propaganda, it wouldn't shock me if it is plain old propaganda on its own.

Hitler vs. Stalin - Author Unknown
Shows a big fight between hitler and, you guessed it, stalin. It seems that the germans were using black magic and Frankenstein-ish techniques - while stalin brought it with the force of his righteousness.

Very small download, about 1.4MB: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q0JYJV1A

Part 3 of the hitler/nazi posts was also an easy one. Grant Morrison is one of the best comic writers in the business, and published this in both Cut (a Scottish arts rag) and Crisis (a British comic that collected mature/political odd-stuff - and along with Revolver, Toxic!, and some other stuff - it made up the british comics revolution in the late 80s).

The New Adventures of Hitler - Grant Morrison
This one is based on the claim from Bridget Dowling that Hitler lived with her family in 1912 and 1913, and is a surreal piece with no small amount of subtle humor.

Here is is, cut and scanned by some devotee from issues 46-49 of Crisis I believe (about 4.5MB): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4YRU9J38

one of my fave comics was from the early 70's , the inferior five

like not brand ecch but dc's version

fun stuff

Finally dug this up, Flapps, courtesy of a DCP member on another board.

Here is the full run of Inferior Five, including Amazing Heroes 35, Showcase 62, 63, and 65, and Inferior Five 1-12.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6LAGI2YA

For others, this is a satirical comic making fun of costumed super-heroes. Notable mainly because of when it came out (in the 70's - which was early for this kind of satire, but IMO is one of the reasons comics made a resurgence in the 80's - people finally learned to both take comics seriously and make fun of them - instead of the gay tights-wearing in-between that dominated the 50's to 70's).

Although published in the USA, I think this only sold in the UK to sarcastic limeys who enjoy puns after a long bath. Flaps, you must be an old fuck, the way you mentioned this one indicates you read it when it was newish.

Since I've posted a lot of the limey comic writers, let's go ahead and review a ground-breaking work that helped bring comics out of the douche-bag "let's save the day" period. His graphic novels also seem to be favorites for mediocre movie adaptations (V for Vendetta and From Hell - not bad, but not good enough on screen, IMO).

Watchmen - by Alan Moore
Watchmen is a sort of homage to Orwell, and is set in 1985. This was one of the first books to show superheros as real-world people, with corresponding dysfunctions and issues. Moore ripped the standard super-hero model apart, and rebuilt it in a somewhat depressing, but often inspiring fashion. The symbolism will hit heavy at times, but this work has influenced a lot of people (comics, books, films, etc).

Edit: new link - 12-issues - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=17Y7OKKU

This one is also due to be released as a film a bit down the road: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchmen_%28film%29

Fuck that off out of my thread, Flappy. Don't be bringing down comic books with your negativity.

All right, you got my interest. How about Six Pac(k), from Hitman...

Sixpack is a short drunk who is so fucked up he has deluded himself into believing he is a superhero. He often has drunken delusions of team-ups with superman/batman/etc. Sort of a cameo character that shows up every few issues in the book (which if the name didn't tip you off, is about a hitman).

The first character I could think of who was fairly short, with stubble, balding, and an enjoyment of substances. As a joke, he did have a mini 1-off issue devoted to himself a ways back: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P2JV0ZVG

I normally stay away from superhero comics, mainly because they tend to suck-ass. There are lots of exceptions to this, though, and in the last decade - a bunch of good writers have done a lot to rejuvenate spandex in this medium.

Here are a couple particularly enjoyable ones:

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9E0KR7M7)
Written and drawn by Frank Miller (who is one of the rare writers doing his own drawing, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad - depending on if you like his style). This book is one of the first comics written that took itself quite seriously, and is often held up with the Watchmen as being responsible for triggering a resurgence of more literary and serious work. It also rushed in an era of imitators, who did gritty for gritty's sake - but this is a good book.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9E0KR7M7 - 61.55 MB

Spider Man - Reign (http://rapidshare.com/files/21395619/Spider-Man_Reign.rar.html)
This 4-issue mini-series just ended a month or two ago, and although pretty solid in its own right, I included it to illustrate just how inspiring the Dark Knight Returns is. As with the Dark Knight, this one shows spider man well after his retirement, and we get to see an old-ass Peter Parker kick some ass in a world seriously fucked up (a lot of post-911 references in here, e.g. the military rule of the city after a disaster, etc). Written and illustrated by Kaare Andrews, who does a solid job on this one. Andrews gives credit to the dark knight inspiration if you are nerdy enough to find it (a character named Miller Janson - the names of the two Dark Knight creators).

http://rapidshare.com/files/21395619/Spider-Man_Reign.rar.html - 76.6 MB

These ones are posted all over the web, so I re-used some one else's upload links (thanks, nameless uploader). As always, instructions are in the first post on how to read these files if you are new to them.

Sure... although even if you get cut-off, it is not much harder than just signing back up. Most ISPs don't really care much, they just need to show the various copyright fuckers that they are doing something.

There are a few ways to hide activity from these fuckers, but I use Peerguardian (or specifically Peerguardian lite, which is the same thing, but only allows one blocklist). It works by blocking IPs in a giant blacklist, and specifically the various copyright orgs are kept in these lists.

This limits their ability to see your traffic, and although they could stay ahead of the blacklists if they tried, I have never heard of anyone getting another email once they stay up-to-date on their list. The full version of peerguardian is pretty cool, in that you can also block ips for ads, spammers, etc - though I only use it for p2p protection.

I used to think I was paranoid, but there have been some gents that have gotten some serious fines for normal leeching/seeding (as opposed to being content originators, which used to be the only people that really worried).

The semantics can get annoying on this stuff, as "bittorrent" can mean a few things:

- The generic name for any torrent network...
- The original client made by the same guys that came up with the network/protocol. Which is an excellent client, particularly on a mac (which has fewer choices than PC users).
- Clients launched later that are using the name to package spyware infested garbage.

You are correct that utorrent is likely the best client for the PC, it is kind of a shame that the base bittorrent client has fallen behind and that evil-folks (tm) are ruining the name. (For mac users, Azureous and the core bittorrent client are your best bets... utorrent dominates on the PC due to its speed and lightness).

Huzzah to the pirating ladies... didn't realize this was a chick sport as well.

One nifty thing about this one is that it is painted in gouache, or bodycolor - which is a type of painting where you suspend pigment in water. Kind of like watercolor, but with larger particles, more pigment, and chalk is added. The 4 issue series is set in the future of an alternative DC universe, and deals with a conflict between traditional superheroes and a new breed of edgier fuckers.

Lots of sledge-hammer like symbolism in this one, parallels with the apocalypse are laid out for us, with quotes from Revelations. I think the author was also trying to made a commentary about old and new comics, and the mores that define(d) each. Overall, this is a good series, probably a great one if you are a big fan of the base characters in the DC universe (which I am not so much). Superman with graying hair in a ponytail, and batman as an old-man in an exoskeleton.

Anyway - back to comic books. Here is the first 5 (4.5 I guess) issues of an interesting series called Powers. Originally published by Image comics, but eventually moved to Marvel's Icon division (which is where creator-owned books go).

Powers - v1 #.5 to #4 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EPYVD854) - by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming.
One cool bit about this series is that it is 50% gritty crime drama and 50% superhero stuff - the two main characters are police detectives in charge of "power" related crimes.

Real good series, and an art style that is off-putting at first, but grows on you (very pop-arty for lack of a better word). v1 (the run at image) went to 37 issues, v2 (at icon) is ongoing - currently to issue 23. Here is a little tidbit, let me know if anyone wants more issues of this one.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EPYVD854 - 43.7MB (.5 to 4 v1)

I was never much of a fan of the Hulk comics, mainly because they have been largely composed of large periods of horrible and boring writing/art. However, the character itself is a cool one, an although a simple concept (we're all dicks as heart, bitches) - it has a lot of possibilities when people bother with it.

Recently, I got re-interested in the Hulk due to a new storyline by Greg Pak called Planet Hulk.

Planet Hulk (Entire Run) - by Greg Pak (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MDQGVCZ0)
After the Hulk goes on yet another rampage, he is trapped and sent into space to live a peaceful existence in space uninhabited by intelligent life. As always, the smart folks (called the Illuminati - a group of superheroes who assist the Masons in running the world) fuck it up... and the result is that the Hulk ends up in a violent fucking world where he can do what he does best (fuck you wolverine, the hulk owned you).

It is a well-executed series, and one of the few big series put out by Marvel that ended on a well-written note (in my opinion).

This series is set to move right into another one, called World War Hulk (premise is obvious) - which looks pretty solid as well. WWHulk is scheduled for release on May 2.

Full Planet Hulk run: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MDQGVCZ0 - 300+ MB

Here is a trailer preview for the World War Hulk series, which acts as more of a summary for the Planet Hulk books than a good teaser, but whatever:

glad you got a kick out of kingdom come oak. i myself normally don't go for the spandex stuff either, but waid and ross took it more seriously with that book, and that's a plus. also,Powers is good i hear, never read it but i've met bendis several times and had dinner with him once at a sushi place in 99'. we talked comics for about an hour and a half while waiting in line to get seated. great guy,and like a year later he was ALL OVER the place and a huge name. he deserves it,he's really talented. many don't know he's also a very good comic book artist.

leonardo and michaelangelo took art as far as it will EVER go and that was 5 fucking hundred years ago

look at comedy even

hicks wasn't such a fucking groundbreaker as he makes out

he just died young and they built a bullshit legend aboot him like bruce lee , james dean and jimi hendrix

the only reason they became legends is that they happened to die at 'the right time' and the blood sucking vultures ( **w* ) who run the entertainment business could make money out of people without paying any fucking royalties

I don't follow comic artists, I follow the writers. I agree, the bottom line is the quality of comic art is pretty much just the multiplication of the quality of the artist and the time spent - and the "time spent" is really the key variable. There are tons of good/great artists out there and there always has been, the successful ones are the fast/prolific ones.

Now and again someone does something new in terms of panel layout, but even a lot of those "new techniques" aren't all that new, they just didn't take the first time they were shown.

I suppose the same thing could be said about the writers, but I find that following a writer leads to a 90% chance of solid work - maybe because I can tolerate good-writing/bad-art - but not bad-writing/good-art.

my all time hero was / is jack kirby

how the fuck he kept it all together partic. in his early 70's dc stuff is beyond me

genius doesn't equate imo

super genius more like

the demon , mister miracle , the new gods , the forever people , spurts of superman and kamandi and some how SOMEHOW he made it all fit together with amazing stunning mind blowing artwork - see pages 2+3 , kids - is utterly beyond me and is mainly the reason why i never bothered entering the hectic world of comic book art

kirby

THE legend imo

Anyone else get into the original Authority by Warren Ellis, the TPBs are awesome as well with Mark Millar and Frank Quitely

Yeah - Ellis's run on Stormwatch and Authority was great - and probably the only reason I open a hero comic now. Him, Millar and to a lesser degree Morrison, Miller, Ennis, and Moore - really brought cape books back from the dark ages - and for the most part, these guys only did it because that was the only work they could get.

For everyone else, here is Ellis's run on Stormwatch and Authority, the former is a comic about a U.N.-sponsored superhero organization watching over the world, and the latter is a sort of spin-off where a group of supes takes it upon themselves to act as the world's guardian and "fixer" - but without any oversight...

The authority was an interesting group, with several of the characters obviously homages or take-offs on existing marvel/dc characters - but done the Ellis way (also known as "better" as a rule) - while others seem completely original to my recollection, or at least with completely original spins.

Stormwatch v1 37-50 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IBV00394)
Stormwatch v2 00-11 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YUXL6IFI)
Stormwatch v2 A Finer World TPB Issues 04-09 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ICJ90B5G)
The Authority v1 01-29 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FYD34C8H)

I like Millar and all, but I didn't think his run on these books could compare to Ellis's. Thanks to Qweth'l for the links above, transplanted from another site.

The zombie movie discussion inspired this, give it a try bitches.

Oddly, in comics (and movies I suppose) - zombies have had a strange sort of renewal or even renaissance period. Everyone is doing it, and a lot of people are doing zombie comics well. Here is the first six issues (an excellent scan of the TPB which collects the first 6) of the Walking Dead, give 'er a try.

Walking Dead - by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=S7SQ42ER)
(Tony is replaced by Charlie Adlard from issue #7 on)
This series is ongoing and has just hit issue 37 at the time of this post. This series centers around Rick Grimes (a small-town cop) and his family and a number of people they come across in a world overrun by zombies. This is definitely inspired by Romero's Dawn of the Dead, and focuses on what happens to people (and interpersonal relationships) after the shit has hit the fan - meaning the weeks and months after. Very well executed, and reads more like an old-school serial radio show or a TV show like the Wire (well executed story arcs that blend together into an overall season, as opposed to self-contained issues).

if you like spandex, yes, some can argue that. but i think frank miller writes spandex far better than kirby ever hoped for. and paul dini, alan moore of course..but he doesn't do much spandex stuff. nothing kirby did can touch V for vendetta or Watchmen or moore's old swamp thing run. brian bendis's ultimate spidey stuff is better written than kirby. kirby is good, and did fun comics, but is hardly the demi-god some folks make him out to be.

One of Kirby's curses is how prolific he was. He cranked out so much stuff, a ton of it is barely average - but some of it is great. Forever People, New Gods, and Mister Miracle stand out - and stuff like Devil Dinosaur showed his funny side. I really like the Eternals in particular (including the two v2 the max series paying homage to it by other folks).

I'm poking around now, let's reread a bit... V, Watchmen, and the Swamp Thing run are all good, but one problem is how often have you reread these books - as opposed to rereading the best of Kirby? I shall go dig up a few Kirby examples for our group perusal.

That's a fine description of the ending to the Watchmen. Although you don't like it, it is hard to come up with a better one.

The Invisibles has some weak points in terms of the art (particularly issues 2-4 which were later redrawn) - but in terms of the stories - nothing faulty there. Grant Morrison rocks. I'll upload this a bit later for the thread... a very worthy comic.

The Invisibles - By Grant Morrison
Grant is in my top 10 of comic writers ever, and is top 3 or 4 in guys cranking stuff out today (which are arguably the best of all time). The Invisibles follows a cell of the Invisible College, a secret organization fighting against oppression using time travel, magic, and overall ass-kicking. The team includes an ex-cop, a british hooligan who may be the next buddha, a transvestite, and other kick-ass characters. They fight against the Archons of Outer Church, alien gods who have already enslaved most of the human race without its knowledge.

You can get winrar at http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm - the direct link to the most current version right now is http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar362.exe

It is essentially identical to Winzip - meaning it packages up a bunch of files into a single file. This is done either for compression purposes or just convenience (easier to download on big file instead of a bunch of smaller ones). Just install winrar, then open the .rar file, which will prompt you to extract the contents somewhere. You can also just right-click on the rar file and hit "extract here" to extract in the same folder where you downloaded.

Girls - by Jonathan and Joshua Luna (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=D0N93RUK)
Girls is a 24-issue series (completed intentionally, not via cancellation, which is all too rare) released by Image. In it, the people of a bum-fuck town are faced with a naked chick who wants to kill their women, fuck their men, and then create duplicates of herself to do the same (via eggs). All this and a giant bubble keeping everyone in town... and you've got yourself a party... oh, yeah, there is a giant sperm-monster too.

Pretty much a story about what people do when shit hits the fan... particularly when two groups are divided by the shit-fanning (in this case, the men and women of the town). This comic is a good example of a book that 5-years ago, wouldn't have made it out of indi-land, but now folks are realizing that people with by this sort of thing on a large scale. The ending could be better, but overall, this is a great example of comics just being used to tell a solid story.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=D0N93RUK - about 340MB

As always, see the first post in this thread for how to read cbr/cbz files, and use winrar to unpackage the 24 issues of goodness.

Oh, and a few books worth looking into that haven't been mentioned (if I have 'em at home, I'll update this post later with appropriate links. If not, just head to your favorite private torrent joint):

Rising Stars

http://hotlinkthis.com//images/2435Rising_Stars_01.jpg

J. Michael Straczynski's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Michael_Straczynski) (planned) 24-issue story about 113 kids who were in-utero at the time some weird meteor shit happened over their town. From worldofjms.com:

As the children grow up, they demonstrate different supernatural powers. Straczynski approaches the story from a real world perspective. What good is being invulnerable if you can't do anything else? How do you get paid if you want to be a costumed crime fighter? What if you just want to be normal? How does the government protect normal people without trampling on the civil rights of those with powers?

Good art, great story, excellent characters. Not the most original premise, but Straczynski is a hell of a writer, and it's well worth a read. My router decided to go on the fritz in the middle of uploading all of these in one archive file, so you get seperate links to the full series (split up into easily digestable, ~50MB chunks), and the three spinoff/oneshots. Thanks to the guys who originally bought, scanned, and uploaded these in the first place.

Oh, and a few books worth looking into that haven't been mentioned (if I have 'em at home, I'll update this post later with appropriate links. If not, just head to your favorite private torrent joint):

J. Michael Straczynski's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Michael_Straczynski) (planned) 24-issue story about 113 kids who were in-utero at the time some weird meteor shit happened over their town. From worldofjms.com:

Since Neal Adams came up in another thread (http://forums.joerogan.net/showthread.php?t=57574), and flappo has made his return from a short exodus, figured I'd upload something the old loon would appreciate.

Green Lantern & Green Arrow (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2JTT8K4F) - by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams
This is a reprinting of a run of comics originally put out in the early '70's, it was repackaged in '83 as seven issues (collecting about double that - Green Lantern 76-90 or so). This includes all the issues the Adams and O'Neil did, and were a huge departure for the Green Lantern book ( Green Arrow was an add-on for a short while, but the main book was GL), as they tackled what were very mature themes for the day. By today's standards, these books seem pretty campy, but then you realize that these guys were writing about overcrowding, pollution, and heroin addiction in a medium that was still pretty much read by youngsters (unlike now, when oddball internet weirdos make up the volume of readership).

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2JTT8K4F - About 90MB

As always, check out the first post in this thread for help with reading cbr or cbz files, and use winrar to unpackage the initial download to get at the goods.

Here comes the goon... yeah - thanks to you and ZZoth - this stuff is good. I believe this is the full run to date:

The Goon (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OV2P2GVW) - by Eric Powell
The story is about a guy named Goon, who was brought up in the carny and is masquerading as an enforcer for a mobster. The average issue seems to involve zombie gangs and/or self-flaming apes... and it will make you hungry for pie.

I'm really liking this one, definitely filling my humor comic quota - somehow obvious but still very dry/subtle. Good shit.

This download includes all issues to-date, including specials, noir, etc. The series is currently on hiatus and scheduled to return any time now - with an issue that was delayed called, "Satan's Shit Baby" or "Satan's Sodomy Baby" - which was delayed due to protests from various christ-lovin' groups.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OV2P2GVW - A little over 400 fucking MB.

This thread has already seen some work Garth Ennis, one of my favorites, but I notice that I haven't posted too many mainstream characters/series as of yet. The Punisher is probably a favorite of most folks, and if anything - has gotten better over the years, particularly when Garth took over writing duties back in v3. Volume 5 is published under Marvel's "MAX" line, which was launched after Marvel broke with the Comics Code Authority and established its own rating system. MAX titles are free to feature explicit content, though it is still Marvel, so it ain't that explicit.

I'm going to upload and post the entirety of volume 5 (to-date, it is ongoing) a handful of issues at a time, specifically one story arc at a time. Another nice thing about the Punisher in the MAX universe is that they let him age (he is around 50 years old) and there are no intersections with various superheroes. Most plot-lines revolve around current events, and it is a fairly serious comic relative to most marvel books (particularly starring someone who has worn the full spandex outfit in the past).

The Punisher - v5 - #1 to #6 - "In the Beginning" (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4GHFAOFX) - by Garth Ennis
This story arc tells the story of the punisher crashing a birthday party then getting reacquainted with an old friend. Not the best of v5, but let's start from the beginning.

I actually didn't like his initial work on The Punisher. It was the first of his stuff I'd read since Preacher, and I was expecting a little more, I guess. I really dug this new stuff, tho. Keep 'er coming.

Speaking of mainstream books, about the only one I keep current on these days is the very excellent Cable & Deadpool. The premise sounds kind of like a bad sitcom, but the execution is phenominal.

You've got Cable, the son of Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey who came back from the future and blah, blah, blah. Whatever. That nigga's been retconned to the point where his backstory is convoluted beyond anything resembling a simple rundown. Basicall, he's a super-serious, broody fuck with a messiah complex.

On the other end, you've got Deadpool, a batshit loony mercenary who came out of the Weapon X program with a variation of Wolverine's healing factor that makes him damn near unkillable. And also covered with tumors. Talks constantly, breaks the fourth wall regularly, and is generally a funny motherfucker.

So they pull some odd couple shit with the two of them, where everytime they transport, they do so together, regardless of where the two of them started in the first place. So you've got Cable out trying to change/save the world and 'Pool just trying to kill some bitches, and they end up having to sort of work together.

Like I said, dumb premise, but it works out to be one of the best serials I've seen out of Marvel in ages. Worth at least checking out. I'll post 'em by story arc like oak with the Punisher shit.

Yeah - v5 is better than v3 and v4 - though v3&4 are enjoyable in a tongue in cheek way. For the most part, when they give a mainstream character to Ennis, he likes to take the piss out of them (his words), but in v5 - he is taking the character as seriously as he can manage.

I'm reading through the Cable & Deadpool stuff now, not bad at all, I'm surprised.

I was pretty disappointed in the Punisher movie, it was a step up from the Dolph version - but that ain't saying much. That plotline was pulled directly from a v3 story arc (or maybe a v4 one, I'm not sure), and it got mangled. Was also a pretty bad choice for a plotline to inspire a movie, as it was very tongue-in-cheek and over-the-top.

That is actually one that I really found much like a really good tv show - meaning that it was just one long story - and each issue was like an episode with a minor cliff-hanger or plot-twist. Also very rare in that they knew when to end it (it was planned to be 24 issues from the get-go, but after selling so well, I'm kind of surprised they didn't extend it). Honestly, I thought it could use another 4-5 issues, the ending seemed rushed to me a bit, though that also gave it some punch.

Punisher v5 - #13-18 - Mother Russia - by Garth Ennis (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AZ5D9L5G)
This is a very strong arc, and marks the beginning of where I realized that Garth wasn't just on a dry streak, but he was genuinely trying to treat this series respectfully. Still plenty of his trademark violence, but he is holding back his humor to very reasonable levels. This series shows that the Punisher, like me, has a soft-spot for old drunks.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AZ5D9L5G - About 72.35MB Motherfuckers.

(Note that the fellow in the first pic (cover) is good ole Nick Fury - albeit drawn a wee bit too much like a skinny ray liotta for my tastes... and the guy in the second pic is not the punisher, but one of my favorite secondary characters that pops up throughout v3 to v5).

How about a brief side-trek away from the Punisher and Cable/Deadpool arcs...

I mentioned this in the Goon upload post back a ways, but the much-anticipated Goon issue titled, "Baby's Sodomy Baby" was scheduled to release this last week. And even after being tabled for months due to protest from cunty religious and anal-hating groups, it finally saw print. I am probably desensitized, but it wasn't too bad at all - and funny as always. A lot of oddball movie references, and at the end (partially shown in a pic below) - we see that the concept of penis to tit ratio is not unique... ;)

Another story arc. 5 issues this time. It's kinda goofy, as it's the title's required tie-in with Marvel's House of M bullshit from a year or two back. Basically, 'Pool goes running around to varous alternate realities to find Cable. Like I said, goofy. Sets up some great shit, tho.

Also, I'll be uploading a bunch of older Deadpool shit to Megaupload tonight. The series (69 issues), a few limiteds, a few one-shots, a Taskmaster tie-in, and the short-lived run of Agent X. There's a lot of megabytes involved, so the first part won't be up 'til tomorrow.

Yup, we sure are. Scanners are standing by with razorblades, I'm guessing it will be online the same day as release... They are also releasing a TPB of the first 6 shortly, and I plan to buy a pile of them to scatter about.

For anyone who isn't familiar, this is the series that inspired me to start this thread. Here are some links to the initial 6 issue run of The Boys, which will be returning very soon...

weaselc, I just found a decent torrent with C&D 1-39. If you don't mind, I can post some more of them (breaking them up story-arc, by story-arc). Only reason I ask is I don't want to steal your thunder or piss off a mod.

Being as I have no way of pming you, I figured I'd just ask here.

I have through 39, which I was planning on burst uploading this week (through 6/9) before I move. If you want to throw an arc or two up, though, please do. This is about sharing comics and getting people into reading and supporting some good shit, not about someone's "rights" to post a series, and I sure as shit ain't gonna get pissed at another fan who can step in.

Right on man, I was just considering throwing them all up too, depending on your response. I've got a few tb of bandwidth I can burn, and I doubt that many people would be interested.

BTW, 40 just showed up, and I'm grabbing that one too. if you want it, i'll send you a link.

So lately there has been a resurgence in crime comics, which interestingly used to be extremely popular in old-time comics. One of the best of these is Criminal, a series written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Sean Phillips. The series is being written as story arcs that stand alone, but intercept with each other. The first 5-issue arc just ended last month - and I was very impressed. Check it out.

Criminal - #1-5 - "Coward" - by Ed Brubaker (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PAB91G5Y)
This arc tells the story of Leo, a pickpocket who has been laying low for years since a bad job, but is pulled back into the game recently. It is a classic (or cliche, depending on your POV) plot - but Brubaker's goal is to write arcs along (or inspired by) classic plots, while putting realism and grit together.

As always, check out the first post of this thread for info on how to read comic files. If the link ever goes down, let me know.

1. Indeed. Though I almost wish that some of his cover characters were used for mainstream characters (e.g. Man of Stone for Kingpin).

2. I don't see the comparison too well, but then I haven't read that much by Grell since I was a kid. I'm just checking out his website now (http://www.mikegrell.com/) - I see more what you're talking about - particularly some of his newer stuff.

Speaking of Tim Bradstreet...

Here's an interview (again from Sever Magazine) that I did with him a while back:

Rhapsody in Crimson
Tim Bradstreet
http://images.comicbookresources.com/cons/phoenix2006/sm/Phx_Tim_Bradstreet.jpg

His work is immediately identifiable. Tough urban yout’s who look as if they just as soon slit you from gullet to grin as look at you. Faces that display the wisdom of the ages and the pathos of eternity stare out from his work compelling all who see it to feel something. Tim Bradstreet is an artist who brings so much more than technical proficiency (which he has by the barrel-full) to table. He brings a sense of drama to all of his characters and shows that there is a lot more to being an artist than drawin’ pretty pictures. Best known for his work with White Wolf’s Vampire: The Masquerade, his work is immediately recognizable to anyone who sees it. His breathtaking covers of such titles as DC Vertigo’s Hellblazer garner him more and more fans every day and now, with his newly released book entitled Maximum Black, he is being given the opportunity to show that there is a lot more going on behind his eyes than merely vampires and role-playing games - a lot more.

As a kid, were you the type that was always drawing?

Yeah, I always drew as a kid, ever since I can remember. I would draw on anything I could get my hands on. When I was about nine or ten, I saw a Frazetta art book at the mall book store. It haunted me. I had no money to buy it with. So every time I was at the mall I would go to the book store and devour the contents. This went on for like a year. Then, I had a birthday and, lo and behold, Frazetta Book 5. It was mine! Before that, all I would draw was cars, stick man wars, and dinosaurs. And then Star Wars came out. At that point, there was a lot of grist for the mill. I kind of discovered a direction.

Were you self taught or did you have formal training?

I am self taught, completely, aside from a little direction from the occasional professional comment. Comics, science fiction/horror book covers, TV, film and music has been my school. The great director's vision and the eye of the cinematographer are my inspiration.

Who do you consider to be great directors? What do you consider to be a short list of great films?

Not only do I love the great directors, but I also love directors with a keen visual eye. That doesn't necessarily make them great, but I like 'em anyway. Here is a short list. William Wyler, John Ford, Anthony Mann, Sidney Lumet, Orson Wells, Otto Preminger, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lean, Akira Kurasawa, Fred Zinneman, John Huston, John Sturges, Robert Wise, Stanley Kubrick, Michelangelo Antonini, Francois Truffaut, William Friedkin, John Frankenhiemer, John Boorman, F. F. Coppola, Ingmar Bergman, Roman Polanski, Alan Parker, David Lynch, Martin Scorcese, Richard Attenborough, Roland Joffe, Milos Foreman, Jean Jaques Annaud, Robert Benton, Peter Weir, James Ivory, Oliver Stone, Ridley Scott, Clint Eastwood, Neil Jordan, Mike Leigh, Joel and Ethan Coen, Frank Darabont, and among the newer generation, Alex Proyas, the Wachowski Bros., Guillermo Del Toro, David Fincher, this list could go on for a while. Also Cinematographers like Vittorio Storaro, John Toll, Janusz Kaminski, Chris Menges, Vilmos Zsigmond, Haskell Wexler, Fred A. Young, and Robert L. Surtees. My short list of great films would read something like this. Lawrence of Arabia, Ben Hur, The Manchurian Candidate, Bridge on the River Kwai, Vertigo, Papillion, Touch of Evil, Seconds, Point Blank, To Kill a Mockingbird, Dr. Strangelove, 2001 A Space Odyssey, El Cid, The Sand Pebbles, Stalag 17, The French Connection, Hell in the Pacific, Deliverance, A Clockwork Orange, The Exorcist, The Searchers, The Wild Bunch, Paths of Glory, The Conversation, Taxi Driver, The Marathon Man, Star Wars, Close Encounters, Blade Runner, The Road Warrior, Midnight Express, The Killing Fields, The Mission, The Elephant Man, Raging Bull, Breaker Morant, The Duelists, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Das Boot, The Right Stuff, The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Seven Samurai, Three Days of the Condor, Blue Velvet, Platoon, The Last Temptation of Christ, Pelle the Conqueror, The Grifters, Miller’s Crossing, Unforgiven, Schindler's List, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Braveheart, Rob Roy, 12 Monkeys, The Usual Suspects, Seven, The English Patient, Fargo, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Andromeda Strain, Last of the Mohicans (Michael Mann), Leon (The Professional) Another list that could go on for days.

Have you ever considered doing an ongoing comic series? Is that what you’re working on with Penny Farthing Press?

Ongoing series are impossible for me at this time. It simply takes to much time. Logistically, it's a motherfucker. Here is what I do. I get a script. I break that down to thumbnail sketches. Upon approval, I cast the entire story. Meaning; I find models to portray all of the principle characters. Then, there is scheduling the photo shoots. Add to that, finding locations. Exterior and interior locations must be found and permissions received from property owners for me to shoot. If I need a police car, I call the police and try to convince them that this would be a cool thing to help me out with, etc. On top of all that, there are props to be found and costumes to be had or created. Starting to get the picture? I shoot ninety per cent of what you see, sometimes less. So, I get all of these things together and then I shoot it. Then, I get the shots processed and then I go into the darkroom. At that point, I start to draw the book. Easily two-four weeks of prep for a twenty-two page book and then three-four weeks for drawing and finishing. If it's a 44-48 page book, the prep time would be similar, and the drawing time doubled. Penny Farthing would like me to illustrate a 48 page book for them. I'd love to do it. But a lot of the material is Victorian era stuff which means costumes. I just finished an issue of Hellblazer for DC/Vertigo issue 141. I did all of the interiors. This is something that over the next year you will be seeing me do more of. I didn't really do sequential for about six or seven years after the graphic novel I illustrated for Eclipse was never published. Slowly, I have gotten back to it. Axel Alonso at Vertigo had a lot to do with that. Next, I will probably be doing a story for Flinch from Vertigo and then maybe an Unknown Soldier one shot. There are also plans for another Hellblazer story. Beyond that, Warren Ellis and I are going to collaborate on a three issue mini series for Wildstorm under Warren's imprint. Most recently, there has been talk of Brian Azzarello and me doing a story for the next Batman black and white. That has me very excited.

A lot of your work has a distinctly "cyber" edge to it. What is it about that look that appeals to you?

The cyber edge stuff is a distillation of my love for that retro fit look, like Road Warrior or Blade Runner. I like to start with a base look and then fuck with it; adding tattoos, electric eye's, blades under the fingernails, data jacks, form fitting body armor, that stuff just brings it all up a notch. That post apocalyptic look really boosts my interest. The problem is, I don't know shit about how this technology works. I just want to make it look cool. I feel like I have a good eye for concept and design. Let the engineers figure out how the bloody stuff works.

A lot of your work that the public has seen has been primarily via White Wolf’s Vampire: The Masquerade line. Did you target these assignments early on or did they just come to you? Why do you think it is that your work has helped to define some of the game playing aesthetic?

It's funny that the conception is that most people know me from Vampire. I talk to people all the time at shows that have no idea what that is. Most of that stuff was done six-seven years ago. I have done a shitload of stuff since then. I never targeted them. They came to me. I had been illustrating a game called Shadowrun from Fasa. It was one of those Cyberpunk games mixed with fantasy. It was while doing Shadowrun that I began illustrating the style you see me doing today. White Wolf thought I'd be ideal to do their Vampire game and I agreed with them. It was the kind of a job that was kind of lurking around, waiting for me. I had a ball doing the work and I felt that it was special. When that book came out, people just freaked. It was huge. It seemed almost everyone acknowledged the work as something special with the exception of White Wolf. They got huge overnight. I felt that I had a hand in that. But really, I was just another freelancer. White Wolf made that very clear to me. They were so completely unprofessional. Early on, I wrote it off to their fast growth, but it never got any better. In fact it got worse to the point that I refuse to ever work for them again. It's a real shame. If they would have treated me fairly, what a run it could have been. That aside, I think what was accomplished was a standard of Illustration in a body of work that had never been seen in games to that point. The fantastic cover painter Brom paid me a wonderful compliment when he wrote his quote for my art book, Maximum Black. He said, "The man responsible for making the gaming genre hip." That kind of comment almost makes up for all the negative shit. I think the reason people like the work is because it is accessible to them. The photo real style makes the characters more real. It is a live action game. If the characters are realistic, I think it makes it more believable that anyone could be something or somebody different. This stuff is very real and special to the people who get into it. In a nutshell, Vampire hit, Goth hit, it was just perfect timing all around.

What do you think when you see someone at a club or something who has lifted their ‘look’ from one of your drawings? Is it a surreal moment like, “Hey, I conceptualized you!”

You know it's a weird sensation 'cause I don't know if I specifically had much to do with it. Maybe I do and I'm just not taking it too seriously. I could tell you about hundreds of instances where I'd be out at a club with friends and they'd say, "Hey, check out that guy. He looks just like that one guy you drew." Girls, guys, it makes no difference, it happens all the time. Did I help conceive that look? I don't really know. I think I may be just one of thousands of people who play a small part in it. Really though, I guess it's kind of flattering to hear people say that kind of stuff to me. I just wish I could collect a royalty.

Do you find, as we approach the coming millennium, that art is getting darker and darker?

I think, to a certain extent that illustration has been headed that way since the late eighties. Maybe even before that. The dark subject matter seems to be on the rise in the past ten years or so. Not just in comics or games either. Music and movies seem to be a step ahead most of the time. I think it's a case of trying to top what's been done before. This movie has got to be darker than this movie or, this has to sound even darker than this stuff, so to speak. In the late eighties, when I started to move toward this modern primitive look, there was no one else doing it that I can think of. To me it was just an extension of where I was at the time. That was one of my influences, visually. Now it seems every character has a fuckin’ tattoo or fifty. But that is one example of that darker ideal. It is all born out of pop culture. That's where I discovered it. Maybe it was born out of the punk movement. Industrial music really took it all a step further. I don't know if it's a millennial thing (if "millennial" is a word I can use). I think the more our society progresses the more it seems the stuff that was done before has to be topped. Everyone wants something new. But it's really just the same concept with a darker coat of paint. Isn't Marilyn Manson just one part Iggy Pop, one part Alice Cooper, and one part David Bowie? He's darker and more dangerous because these guys paved the way. Not to take anything away from Manson, I think he's very talented and he's got great taste in producers. I don't think were done topping dark by a long shot.

When you approach a blank piece of drawing paper, how do you conceptualize your ideas and begin to document them?

Very simply put, I take all of the information available to me and digest it, much like an actor preparing for a role. Then I try and bring what I know about the character into his/her body language. If it's a cover or single illustration, I try to add elements of the story or something personal to the character into the piece. Whether it's something like a setting or graphic imagery, either one can do the job.

http://www.lambiek.net/artists/b/bradstreet_tim/bradstreet_punisher.jpg

A lot of your characters exude a sense of history; people with pasts, presents, and futures. Do you oftentimes enlist the help of friends to model for you in order to achieve that?

Definitely, that is something I'm cognizant of. I love historical looks. Whether it be military, straight costumes or whatever. I love period stuff. World War I trench infantry uniforms are so cool. The Australian units, the firearms, vintage, vintage, vintage. I love to take certain kinds of historical gear and retrofit that stuff into my work. Kind of a hodge podge of different periods blended together to make something unique. Picking a model that has the right look is very important. Some people look like their genes are brand new, made in the last half century. And then there are those people who have a distinctive old world look. Europeans are very singular in their appearance. They have the old world look. In the states, it's been bred out of a lot of people. But the fact is, where else could you find such diversity in facial features and body types. It is important to me to use everything at my disposal to give the character some tiny bit of humanity, something someone can identify with. Visually, it's these little subtleties, a flask from the eighteenth century, a squadron patch on a sleeve, a tattoo on the arm, World War II web gear, etc, that can give the characters a sense of identity. The onlooker then can take these visual clues and piece together their own history for the character. This is why a lot of the subject matter to my illustrations is left ambiguous. I like to leave something to the imagination.

Does the work take on a life of its own or do you see the image first and then replicate it on the page?

I usually start out with a mental picture which I then sketch out. It's something that just presents itself to me. Then, I take that initial concept to the photo shoot. Very often I get exactly what I want. But the best stuff happens when the model makes it his/her own, and runs with it. Sometimes I pick up a great vibe in the photo shoot and just roll with it. Some of my favorite shots are the ones that get real spontaneous and eclipse my initial concept. The photo studio can be a very creative place itself. I'm usually very open to the model's input. I love the energy that brews up when the model really gets it. Sometimes I don't like any of the shots and find the groove when I'm inking. Much more challenging that way, and every bit as satisfying.

From where to you draw the majority of your inspiration?

It used to be from other artists, but, for the last ten or so years, it has been with film and music. It's all using the frame. Cinematographers inspire me in a big way. I have grown to really love and appreciate photography. Lighting is everything. Music's inspiration works best on me while I'm doing the actual illustration part. I primarily listen to soundtracks, and when I don't, it's everything from Johnny Cash to Tool.

Based on the varying subject matters you address in your work, do you approach each genre differently?

Yeah, for sure. However, I don't think the average person is likely to really get as much from it. The average person is probably just checkin' it out ‘cause it's cool for a few weeks to buy trading cards. Inevitably, some people would discover something cool and keep it with them. Those are the ones that make it worthwhile.

Why do you think that the comic industry has fallen on the hard times?

That's a tough one, or an easy one depending on how you look at it. Personally, I think the collectors market in the late eighties stabbed a knife right through the heart of good comics. The glut of new books, the fucking ashcans, the chromium covers, the alternate or "variant" covers, etc. That shit killed us. What were there, like 450 titles out there for a while? Who could keep up? And then, the paper shortage jackin' prices up. Comics started getting expensive. Add to all that the distributor wars. I'm surprised there is still an industry. I thank God there is.

Do you feel that the ‘serial art’ medium is still a viable one? What I mean is that what with the advent of multi-media and desktop publishing, do you think that type of storytelling has had its day and is that day is over?

I hope that sequential art in the form we have known it, will be around forever. Is it still viable? I think that it is. In the same way books will never be completely out of vogue. There is a romanticism about holding the information in your hands. If we ever get to the point in my lifetime when all of the things we read or learn from become completely digital, then it's time for me and a few thousand other people I know to leave the planet and start a new primitive colony. The flashiest convenience we'd have would be light bulbs and frozen pizza. It would indeed be a shame if my children would not be able to hold a newly printed, hot off the presses copy of my most recent work. Hopefully, it will never come to that, but change is inevitable. Illustration is an art form that can exist on paper or digitally, but there is something about holding an original drawing that you cannot get from a keyboard. I hate to sound to negative about where our technology is going. There are a lot of very talented digital artists around. I hope for a happy medium.

Are there any subjects or images that you would not address?

There are probably a few. I saw a Danzig comic once; I can't remember the name of it. This cheerleader was kidnapped and brutalized by a bunch of young thugs, stuffed in a van, raped in all orifices, had lighter fluid squirted on her sexual organs and lit on fire, beaten and then beaten some more. She was then taken to a secluded wooded area and tied to a post with barbed wire or something. I keep thinking, these guys are gonna suffer huge. Something's going to happen to give this girl her dignity back, right? Wrong. A phone rings at her parent’s house. The father answers. The mother is hysterical, frantic with tears. She's lost her baby. Her girl is missing and she's going through hell. The father takes the call in another room, and tells the wife it'll be OK. It turns out that the father is talking to the kidnappers, but not to discuss ransom. He fucking hired them. He's just making sure his ass is covered. He hired them to kidnap and dispose of his daughter so he could use the money for her college education for some business deal. That is gratuitous beyond belief. The fucked up thing is that someone wrote it and someone drew it. I'm pretty sure their mothers didn't see it. I believe in freedom of expression so if that's how they want to spend their time "creating" then I hope they can live with it. I prefer to glorify the female form. I think it would be a lot of fun to do an erotic con where all the artists that usually attend conventions only bring their dirty pictures. The one's no one else has seen but a few friends. Hell, I'd even bring my mom. She'd love it.

Do you think that art can ever go too far?

Anything can go too far. It's a matter of taste.

Who then, would be the arbiter of said taste? I mean, should certain work be restricted or should each member of the proposed audience decide where the line should be drawn - for them - and then, choose to view it or not?

Even though I don't condone the earlier mentioned kidnap/rape/torture/murder story, I think they have a right to do it if they choose to. That kind of material is going to exist whether someone likes it or not. I thought there would be a light of decency or an avenging angel somewhere in the story. The fact that there wasn't, is what made the thing offensive to me. But it got me mad. It had that power. Whether it was good or bad it got a reaction from me. If you think about it, you can find a silver lining in it. The story was horrible, but it made me think. This kind of shit happens. That kind of stuff has been happening since the dawn of man in one form or another. It's a slice of very ugly life. It's a good example of the kind of situation you hope you never have to come into contact with. That's real horror. It could happen to any one of us. So what I'm saying is that no matter how offensive a thing is, it can have meaning for someone, even if it's only the guy who writes or draws the stuff. If you don't like it, don't look at it.

http://www.lambiek.net/artists/b/bradstreet_tim/bradstreet_tim_hellblazer.jpg

Do you feel that multi-media is the wave of the future for artistic expression?

I fear that it could be. I don't want to be a dinosaur so I bought a Mac G3 for graphics purposes. It just saved me three weeks work on an issue of Hellblazer. I still did a lot of work though. It's on paper and everything. I even used real ink and real paper. I can't stand the thought of not being able to physically draw and touch the original piece.

What artists do you think are working at the top of their craft?

My finger isn't exactly on the pulse of the art world, so I'll stick to a few in the business and a few out in other arenas. Drew Struzan, Soryama, Mike Mignola, Gary Gianni, Geoff Darrow, Phil Hale, Rick Berry, Jeff Laubenstien, Mark Chiarello, Kent Williams, James Bama, Steranko (forever), Dean Motter, Brian Bolland, Dave McKean, Jill Thompson, Mark A. Nelson, Brom, and Frazetta will never die.

What's next on your agenda? What will you be releasing next?

Covers for Hellblazer (ongoing), covers for a Punisher 12 issue series written by Garth Ennis, covers for a 4 issue Star Trek TNG series, a story for Flinch for Vertigo, illustrating a 3 issue series (top secret) with writer Warren Ellis for Wildstorm under Ellis' imprint, an Unknown Soldier one shot for Vertigo. Down the line another Hellblazer story, an 8 page story for Batman: Black and White, covers for a Transmetropolitan story arc, and a cover for the Gangland collection from Vertigo. Phew!

Are there any projects that you’d like to pursue in the near future?

There is a project that I want to do in the very near future. It's kind of an excuse for me to do a body of work that has no restrictions. I want to do like twenty-eight full page illustrations. Another fourteen widescreen illustrations to go with them; like spot illo's. Whatever the fuck I feel like drawing. Whatever subject matter that needs to get out. I already have a few in the works. They will have many different themes: time travel, science fiction, historical, horror, fantasy, etc. Then, I'm going to get twenty-eight different writers to do short stories about each piece. Five hundred words, carte blanche. Whatever the illustration says to them, they can write about it. It could be a poem, a straight story, the thoughts going through this guy’s head, or maybe they want to write about the pack of cigarettes laying on the ground next to this dead guy and how they led him to his final destruction. Stories from illustration. Kind of a reverse of the way it's normally done. My working title for the book is Battlescar. The idea of it is kind of like doing an art book or portfolio but with something extra. I really want to take my illustration to the next level and this is the kind of project that could really get those juices flowing. I've already spoken to a number of people about contributing stories and have verbal commitments from: Mike Stackpole, actor/writer Barry Pepper, director/screenwriter Guillermo Del Toro, director/screenwriter Frank Darabont, Bernie Wrightson, David Schow, and Brian Azzarello. Among others that we are hoping to get are: Stephen King, Harlan Ellison, Neal Stephenson, Andrew Vachss and Clive Barker. The Wheels have begun to turn on this and I'm currently working up the proposal. If I can't find a comics publisher to do it, I will be talking to book publishers soon. The other thing that I am pursuing is doing more work for films. I am going to be designing characters and doing some production work for Guillermo Del Toro for his movie Monte Cristo when that gets going. And I have a few other projects that are in the works as well.

Cool article, thanks. I knew that his art included a lot of photos as foundation pieces, but I had no idea that it was often a 90% staged photo shoot underneath. I always had the thought (with no basis) that he just took shots of people in the right positions, then drew/painted on the costumes and atmosphere (which I'm sure he does in some cases, but I had no idea that was the tiny minority).

Quite a few pages back in this thread, we were comparing current artists/writers to some of the old school folks from the 60's and 70's - particularly a man who is thought of as one of the gods of comics: Jack Kirby (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Kirby).

Kirby pretty much was Marvel's signature style - and he laid it down for Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Captain America, and dozens of others - and later did the same at DC. I've always found that the interesting thing about Kirby is just how much work he cranked out - likely 10 times that per year than any artist today. Sometimes that showed (in terms of less than stellar quality) - but sometimes he just cranked out cool shit all day long.

I particularly love a trilogy of titles he did at DC (New Gods, Mister Miracle, and The Forever People) - which Flappo has pointed out is fookin genius (and I concur) - and he also came up with another one of my favorites: The Eternals - which still inspires a lot of new comics that seem cutting edge in terms of plot at a glance - but are often tipping their hats to Kirby.

So anyway - here are The Eternals. Four times. Once by Kirby (v1), once by Bigillis & Buscema (v2), once by Neil Gaiman (a great author inside and outside of comics) & John Romita Jr., and lastly via the Marvel Max imprint - by Chuck Austen & Rev Walker. I recommend reading the Marvel Max effort first if you are new to these characters - or just start from the beginning if you are an oldie. Either way, cheers to Kirby and the hundreds of characters he started. Although none of these are stellar (or the best work of any of the writers/artists mentioned), it is all good - and a good example of watching the evolution of just a single creative thought that came out of Kirby's cool-ass mind.

The Eternals v1 - 1-17 + Annual 1 - by Jack Kirby - circa 1978 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EQ6EVVYQ) - 108MB
The Eternals v2 - 1-12 - circa 1985 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WCIZVTRU) - 109MB
The Eternal - Marvel Max - 1-6 - circa 2003 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=M4BUIT15) - 65MB
The Eternals - Gaiman - 1-7 - circa 2006 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WM9GNTOI) - 128MB

Hey oak99, who's the guy in your avatar? He looks like King Mob but with a pair of funky fresh shades.

Spider Jerusalem - the main character of Transmetropolitan - which is likely my favorite comic with a decent length run. I believe I already mentioned why I haven't yet posted it here: http://forums.joerogan.net/showthread.php?p=1416508&highlight=sister#post1416508

Either that or I just haven't gotten around to uploading it yet. I have posted some other stuff by Warren Ellis in this thread though. Ellis is obscenely good, and doesn't have any of the sloppiness that Morrison's work sometimes has (which, I think, is due to Ellis being a pain-in-the-ass to his artists - whereas Morrison lets them wing it).

By Brian Azzaello and Richard Corben. The art in this one is a bit odd, but it works stylistically anyway. DANGERGIRL by Scott Campbell is in no way a breakthrough work of art. It's more of a "got nothing to do between now and the next issue of "THE BOYS" and I'm not rereading all my shit for the 100th time" type thing. It's a fun little read if you like Spy shit, puns and zingers, and corny humor. Campbell's nack for drawing women in sexually alluring poses even when they are just changing a tampon or scratching their armpit provided hours of masturbatory fun when I was younger so I'd keep it from 12 to 16 year old boys not because of content but purely to protect yourself from finding your son, brother or neighbor's kid rubbing one off on your computer.

Let's get some smart comics back on board here. Some more Warren Ellis for ya all. This is a 12-issue series in its completion.

Global Frequency - by Warren Ellis (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=40N0ZAW3)
The Global Frequency is an independent, covert intelligence organization with 1,001 members - forming an active smart mob communicating by specially modified video mobile phones through a central dispatch system. The purpose of the organization is to protect and rescue the world from the consequences of the various secret projects that the governments of the world have established, which are unknown to the public at large. The people on the Global Frequency are chosen and called on for their specialized skills in a variety of areas, from military personnel, intelligence agents, police detectives to scientific researchers, academics, athletes, former criminals and assassins. These threats that the organization deals with are equally varied and usually world-threatening, ranging from rogue military operations and paranormal phenomena to terrorist attacks and religious cults.

OK - here is my current favorite of all time (which changes regularly - but hasn't for a while) - and the source of my avatar for the curious.

Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis
This series is about Spider Jerusalem - an author normally forced to work for newspapers to feed his various addictions. Spider is likely a homage to gonzo journalism and Hunter Thompson - and not-so-subtly preaches the importance of the press not sucking ass - particularly when the post-cyberpunkish world is run by corrupt leaders that make GWBush look like an amat... well, pretty much like GWBush, but with more technology at their disposal... ;)

This book is ahead of its time in terms of envisioning the change that the internet would yield, and things analogous to youtube, rampant reality tv, podcasting/internet radio, aggregate/stripped-down newsfeeds - they all pop up.

If you download just one thing in this thread, this is it, bitches. As always, comic reader software is linked from the first post in this thread - PM me or respond to this thread if you need help.

Y: The Last Man - by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra
Published by Vertigo, DC's smart comic division, about the sole surviving male human after the spontaneous, simultaneous death of every male mammal on Earth. This series is just about over (planned for 60 issues - and currently at 56) but I figured I'd post it now and update it as it finishes.

Another good series similar to The Girls that takes the "normal" world and average people, and puts them through a crazy event. Being the last man on earth doesn't look quite as good as I imagined...

Fables - by Bill Willingham
Put out by Vertigo (DC's smarty-pants imprint), Fables tells the stories of characters from fairy tales and folklore, who now live in a neighborhood in New York - due to being forced out of their homelands. Fables is one of the winningest series ever in terms of comic awards, and has come close to sweeping all the categories in the past.

The big bad wolf is sheriff, Jack (from the beanstalk) is a con artist, and Snow White long ago dumped Prince Charming due to him fucking around.

Give it a try.

Yeah - I have all of them downloaded. I liked the original black and white ones by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the others I have but have not (and likely will not) read.

Check out the wiki page, and let me know if you want anything in particular uploaded - otherwise I will upload volume 1, since that is the best of them as I have heard. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_%28comic_book%29

Fables does not have a scheduled ending. The tone of it is such that it feels as though he is either going to end it in about a year or do something very big (like have all the Fables move back to the homelands or something). It also wouldn't surprise me if he simply ceases the current timeline and starts doing prequel type stuff.

I'd still recommend reading it without regard to the ending, it is written pretty tightly in arcs and often has complete closure of story lines. However, if you don't like being caught in the middle of something - stop at issue 59. Issue 60 begins the Flycatcher (Good Prince) arc - which is kicking off as one of the best of the series - and has 3-4 issues left to go yet.

June 29th, 2007, 10:56 PM
(This post is a work in progress, and will keep growing over time. I will post updates later in the thread when it has a major change.)

By request, here are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. These guys have had a TON of issues and series, so there is a lot to digest - and still quite a bit I either don't have or didn't upload. A lot of it is crap unless you are a hardcore TMNT fan - but for anyone wanting a quick read - scroll to the bottom and download the Leonardo - Blind Sight special - which I liked.

Also on the way are Preacher (Garth Ennis's magnum opus of coolness) and Sin City (arguably the same thing for Frank Miller) next in line - along with the much anticipated "The Internet if for Porn - as are Comics" post. Note that I still have my eyes out for some old requests made in the thread, but not having much luck at the moment.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) - created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird

TMNT - v1 - 1984 - 1993 - 62 Issues
The first volume of the turtles was pretty ground-breaking, and it came at a time when the major publishers were realizing that black-and-white independent comics actually could have a mainstream audience. Most TMNT stories outside of the comics (cartoon, first movie, etc) had its roots in v1 - where the turtles are actually teenagers, and although well-trained - are still at the beginning of their career.

TMNT - v1 - #1-20 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NY8L3XRQ) - 278MB
TMNT - v1 - #21-40 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4JH02VB7) - 271MB
TMNT - v1 - #41-62 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GYL7OCU7) - 299MB

Tales of the TMNT - v1 - 1987 - 1989 - 7 Issues
A spin-off series, which happened in the middle of the run of the regular v1 series. I have no idea why it existed, maybe for similar reasons to Amazing/Spectacular Spiderman - people liked them and would buy multiple issues a month?

Tales of the TMNT - v1 - #1-7 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TMNE55QY) - 78MB

TMNT - v2 - 1993 - 1995 - 13 Issues (incomplete)
v2 was not very popular (no idea why), and as far as I can find, not all issues have been scanned - but here are the ones out there.

TMNT - v2 - #3-6 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=I6I9X59E) - 58MB

TMNT - v3 - 1996 - 1999 - 23 Issues
v3 was a big departure for the turtles, the turtles are scarred, old, and altogether fucked up. Note that v3 sort of stands alone, and later volumes discard a lot of the happenings here.

TMNT - v3 - #1-23 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NU1UU5YB) - 240MB

TMNT - v4 - 2001 - 2006 - 28 Issues
v4 is now on hiatus due to the folks working on the newest Turtle movie, and has not been announced for renewal (or replacement).

TMNT - v4 - 1-15 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CMDRVLD6) - 266MB
TMNT - v4 - 16-28 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N1782GQK) - 166MB

Tales of TMNT - v2 - 2004 - 2007 - 35 Issues and Running
The only series still running.

Tales of TMNT - v2 - 1-17 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JF9FAGJ8) - 217MB
Tales of TMNT - v2 - 18-35 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A6LIYW0C) - 167MB

Various Specials:
Bodycount (1999) - v3 Special (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TXEGBD9A) - 59MB
8-issue Mini-Series (2003) by Dreamwave Ent. (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=B84SM5JD) - 50MB
Tales of Leonardo - Blind Sight (1-4) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LYREI377) (2006) - 29.5MB
Official Movie Adaptation (2007) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CXST9E13) - 35MB (do not read if you have not and intend to see the recent movie).

Other Shit:
Archie Comics also licensed the Turtles and has put out a bunch of series that follow separate time-lines/stories, and have a much younger tone. I don't have these, but they are in the back of my download queue and I'll eventually get them and upload them - but they are not a priority as the archie books suck-ass and were written for 12 year olds.

No sense waiting on this one, there is an excellent megaupload folder already out there with all issues... might as well reuse this one as more traffic will ensure the links never become inactive. Thanks to Qweth'l for this upload folder - who puts up a few gig of comics every couple weeks for all of in the dork community and is rapidly becoming a kick-ass scanner.

Hellblazer - John Constantine
John Constantine is the main protagonist of the long-running (225+ issues) Hellblazer. The character was first seen in the Swamp Thing, and was created by the great Alan Moore (of Watchmen and V for Vendetta fame). Constantine has magical powers and what'not - and was spawned from an idea to create a "blue-collar warlock" - someone streetwise, working class, and from a different background than the standard comic mystic.

I'm a fan of this series, though it does have its ups and downs (has to with that many issues). I particularly like how John is not particularly tough, he avoids physical confrontation and using spells, and largely relies on his wits to move the story forward - making this more like a detective series with a twist than a magic-slinger book.

Only one main link needed this time:

http://www.megaupload.com/?f=YOV0F4Z8 <-- points to a megaupload folder with 16 sub-links going to around 2GB of Hellbrazer goodness.

For once, the movie didn't ruin the comic - and was close enough that only a handful of super-dorks (tm) were mildly bitching at petty shit. Welcome to Sin City... with a fuck-lot more stories than in the movie - but the same fun.

Sin City - by Frank Miller
Sin City books were released as "yarns" or story arcs, initially as individual books - then each arc was eventually collected as a trade paperback. Here we go:

The Hard Goodbye
A Dame To Kill For
The Babe Wore Red and Other Stories
Silent Night
The Big Fat Kill
That Yellow Bastard
Daddy's Little Girl
Lost, Lonely, & Lethal
Sex & Violence
Just Another Saturday Night
Family Values
Hell and Back (A Sin City Love Story)

One last one exists (13 Booze, Broads, & Bullets), but it only collects short stories that were placed in the other 12 yarns - so it isn't included.

All Sin City books share the same visual style and tone, but deal with different characters - albeit characters that often cross-over (normally not in a way where they are aware of it). This is definitely the core quality that I was looking for in the movie (the cross-over aspect) - which executed it very very well.

This is another series where there is no sense in me uploading again, as someone has already done it neatly enough for my OCD nature. Thanks to DeadShaun for the up, even though only fags like squirrel girl... ;)

As always, please check out the first post of this thread for how to read .cbr/.cbz files, and let me know if links break.

Hmm, haven't read comics since I was a kid, but what I liked..

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/41/HouseOfSecrets92.jpghttp://www.angelfire.com/comics/cainhom/images/jose.jpg

used to love House of Mystery/House of Secrets, and an old western called Kid Colt.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/17/Kidcolt-11.jpg

When the anime craze came along years ago, my boys followed all the usual DBZ, Gundam, etc etc etc, but the only one I ever really enjoyed was SPAWN..

Heh, kinda neat memories, hadn't thought of that shit for years.

No worries - any time. I just updated the Turtles post again with the pending uploads. Various comics boards will be happy with the organized mirrors - so anyone with a request - let me know.

Also, on a side-note - if anyone wants a lesson as to where to get comics directly let me know - even hardish-to-find stuff that isn't on torrent networks and what'not. This thread is meant to be a sort of combo "my favorite shit" along with fulfilling requests - but I can point anyone to the dealers if they are smoking more than my middleman ass can deliver. :D

The problem with the direct sources is that it can be like trying to drink water from a fire hydrant - just too much shit to sort through.

I too must thank you Oaky!

I have picked up comic up since I was probably 10 or 11, but I've been downloading all this shit! I am hooked on the Punisher! I just started reading Y-The Last man and it is good as well.

Cheers Mate, you've turned a dull few weeks at work into an exciting few dull weeks at work.

No worries. Enjoy - better reading comics than actual work.

I do have quite a bit of Conan stuff - used to read the old Savage Sword of Conan magazine - and have downloaded a lot of the old and newer stuff (haven't read any though - just downloaded). I'll upload some shortly.
