Well I got a real treat for you mafakkas today...

I've collected the entire "Criminal Macabre" series together in one handy bundle, arranged into chronological order for your reading pleasure.

14 and 15 are missing, which is quite sad because I'm definitely enjoying it, and now I don't wanna read on.

Supernatural Freak Machine #1-3 (CM 11-13)(This is an as of yet incomplete storyline due to un-published issues)

Dark Horse picked the title up from IDW after they dropped the ball and they plan to release a trade paperback with the missing issues later this year.

But yea, I know what you mean.

I have never read a comic. Which should I start with?

stootchmaster
August 28th, 2009, 01:59 AM
Maybe The Boys, or DMZ, or The Walking Dead or Punisher (The Max version)

Might as well start with the best ones out right now. . .

If you want to go straight superhero style, then maybe Captain America.

Preacher, 100 Bullets, and Gotham Central are good too, but aren't running monthly anymore.

Start from the beginning of any of those and you can't go wrong.

^^ True on that. Ellis/Robertson were a great team there. Nice cyberpunk action. Easy to get into. :sylvia:

Assuming that it's what your friends are talking about, here's Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers of Victory (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CX335ZBP). Thanks to the original uploader.

Per the rules of the thread, a review is in order once you get through it, law.

I'm tapping out.

I started reading it, made it through about 4 books, and fuck it I quit. I won't ruin it for anyone else by going into my opinion, here, but suffice it to say that it's just not for me. Someone else needs to read this and let us all know how it ends.

Let me know what kind of lawyer you are. And post your wife's gash.

Then I'll be in the mood. So sure!

Edit: I haven't read it yet either, but WeaselC never lets me down, so I am surprised by your opinion.

Alright, I'll post the gash.

You have to give me time to get it dressed up like a cowboy first, though. She likes it to be photogenic and movie genre-based.

No, seriously. Tell her I asked.

If she isn't familiar with my work, let her know I'm a pretty big deal. Tell her how you e-feel about me.

Heh. Nice job.

Like I said in the edit (which you probably missed, as it wasn't 'til a day after the post), you've gotta read them in the right order for it to make any kind of sense. If you just read Bulleteer 1-4 in a row (like I did at first), you're just going to end up ass-confused. The proper order is in a text file in the bundle.

Anyway, it's Morrison touching on some of the more obscure DC capes as part of an over-arching story. Given the writer, you shouldn't be surprised that it's a little bit weird, though not nearly so much so as The Invisibles or The Filth. Long story short, there's this big global threat (civilization-ending fairies. No, really), and while none of the titular seven characters meet one another, each has part of the story told from their perspective.

Trying to explain further would be an exercise in futility, so I'll leave it with this: If you like Morrison's more out-there stuff, you'll most likely dig this. If not, you probably won't. If you've never read his stuff, this isn't a good one to jump in with.

As for myself, I wasn't blown away, but I also didn't feel like I wasted my time. I have the feeling that if I re-read it, I'd probably get more out of it, but that's not likely to happen. Sooo, yeah. That happened.

Wic

I naturally assumed all of Morrison's stuff is made to be reread.

Yep. Don't see the payoff here the way there was with some of his other stuff, tho. The subtleties you learn to look for from Morrison felt forced, like he was handed a non-AAA capes property, and felt obligated to try to Invisibles-it-up. Felt kind of like Shyamalan cramming a twist into a movie because it's expected (only the movie itself wasn't half bad).

I need to get back into reading comics. I read a shit ton this summer at work. Probably catch up on Fables.

I've heard good things about Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps, anyone read them? I don't know much about the character, so I don't know where a good place to start would be. Maybe I should go to an actual comic book store this weekend. Thanks in advance, and awesome thread everyone.

Personally I think that Green lantern is one of the dumbest superheroes created or at least it's execution in the few issues I did read.
Of course if that has somehow changed over the years do let me know..
Found these links for you to rummage through..

Haven't seen this mentioned/uploaded in this thread yet but it's definitely worth checking out..

Incognito

A pretty decent read from the creative team behind "Criminal" and "Sleeper".
I of course leave you one book short of the conclusion cause that's just how I roll '09...

Incognito 1-5 (http://www.mediafire.com/?zytl0znzwhh)

I really dug this. Like with most of Brubaker/Phillips's other stuff, there's nothing revolutionary about most of the themes, but the delivery and execution are superb. Anyway, the sixth and final issue just dropped.

I love FreakAngels, really gorgeous art for an 'amatuer' working with Ellis.

The last issue of Young Liars came out yesterday. I've read all 18 issues and I'm still not entirely sure what the fuck it was about. Can anyone clue me in? I'm not often so confused by a comic but FUCK.

Saw the trailer today so of course I had to track down the comic..

246055

Writer: Robert Venditti
Artist: Brett Weldele

The year is 2054, and life is reduced to a data feed. The fusing of virtual reality and cybernetics has ushered in the era of the personal surrogate, android substitutes that let users interact with the world without ever leaving their homes. It's a perfect world, and it's up to Detectives Harvey Greer and Pete Ford of the Metro Police Department to keep it that way. But to do so they’ll need to stop a techno-terrorist bent on returning society to a time when people lived their lives instead of merely experiencing them.

The Surrogates is a story about progress and whether there exists a tipping point at which technological advancement will stop enhancing and start hindering our lives. It is also a commentary on identity, the Western obsession with physical appearance, and the growing trend to use science as a means of providing consumers with beauty on demand.

Hmmm, I'd say at least go back and start at the Sinestro Corps war. Then by the time you get to Blackest Night you won't be going, "What the fuck is a Red Lantern?"

Hmmm, I'd say at least go back and start at the Sinestro Corps war. Then by the time you get to Blackest Night you won't be going, "What the fuck is a Red Lantern?"

I think Blackest Night #0 covers a lot of that ground, but I recommend reading ALL Green Lantern books if you dig the story....the entire story has been building towards this. Geoff Johns is the best writer in comic books today.

I'll add #0 & some of the other books in my above post :sylvia:

It's a toss up between Warren Ellis, Garth Ennis and Robert Kirkman.

Warren Ellis is consistently excellent, Garth Ennis is fucking hilarious, and Kirkman does character development better than virtually anyone in any medium. The Walking Dead is a goddamn magnum opus.

It sure as FUCK isn't any of the soulless cocksuckers responsible for those awful green lantern books... Jesus Christ.

If DC actually had good writers, Jason Todd would have never come back to life and turned into a fucking monster. Seriously, none of the titles are even coherent most of the time.

Yeah, the geek discussions I sometimes follow on the webbernet will occasionally talk about Ellis and Ennis losing a step and going for shock over substance. Geoff Jphns is almost universally praised though and I think he deserves it. Superhero comics are cheesy by definition but Johns does a great job making a good story out of the material. If you don't like that genre that's fine but that doesn't mean it's automatically shit. Superheros were my first comic love and will probably be my last, even the Green Lantern.

Now, more stuff for me to mooch, please!

Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead
Written by Steve Pugh
Illustrated by Steve Pugh
Based on a Story by Warren Ellis
Published by Radical Comics

245395245396
245397245398
(four cover versions of issue 1 shown)

In a not-so-distant future, the souls of the dead can no longer leave our earthly realm. Instead, they float along the electromagnetic streams and, occasionally, stir up some trouble. And when that trouble occurs, Detective Exorcist Alice Hotwire is ready to do what needs to be done.

That’s right. I mentioned elements of fantasy, sci-fi, and police procedural stories in one synopsis. How is that even possible?

Surprisingly, Warren Ellis presents a world that makes plenty of sense. In fact, after reading the first issue of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead, any reader could most likely list all of the rules that govern this world. The concept of following rules is a theme that flows throughout this story, as DetEx (“Detective Exorcist,” remember?) Hotwire is obsessed with rules. (What is it about modern detective characters and their obsessions with rules? The characters of Dexter Morgan and Gregory House come to mind, and now, apparently, we can add DetEx Alice Hotwire as well.)
Speaking of rules, it is when the rules are broken that DetEx Hotwire really gets curious and the story really kicks off...Link (http://comicnews.info/?p=3637)

Writer: Mike Carey
Artist: Peter Gross
Colours: Chris Chuckry
Publisher: Vertigo (DC Comics)

245462245463

Mike Carey and Peter Gross re-ignite their working partnership from Lucifer to bring us one The Unwritten, a story with a premise that screams Vertigo, while simultaneously retaining a sense of the new and unknown. Of course, there is a difference between original and good, and a story such as this really needs to go several rounds before you really know whether the plot has the invention and the legs to keep pace with the ingenuity of the concept. But everything about this incredible-value, oversized $1 first issue suggests that The Unwritten can more than hold its own.

Tom Taylor is the son of Wilson Taylor, superstar fantasy author (unashamedly in the Harry Potter / Chronicles of Narnia mould) who disappeared in mysterious circumstances several years ago. Tom continues to live off his father’s fame on the convention circuit, but as more than just the writer’s heir – he is also the central character in his father’s stories. Unable to make his own mark on the world, Tom slowly finds his reality brought into question, as rumours surrounding his family past start to surface, and characters from his fantasy life begin to make an appearance...Link (http://comicsnexus.com/2009/05/18/review-the-unwritten-1/)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/87/Secret_Origin_1.jpg

Superman: Secret Origin is a six-issue monthly American comic book limited series written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Gary Frank. The story features what Johns and DC Executive Editor Dan DiDio are calling a "definitive" telling of the origin story of Superman, dealing with his life in Smallville, his first adventure with the Legion of Super-Heroes, his friendship and eventual bitter rivalry with Lex Luthor and his arrival in Metropolis and at the Daily Planet.[2] The series' first issue was released on September 23, 2009 and will run through February of 2010.

The story begins in 1935 Manhattan with an unknown man, later to be identified as Frank Castleione, waking up and turning on his radio, during which he is seen with several bullet marks across his back. In the following scenes, a radio broadcast airs detailing a lone vigilante, all the while the still unnamed man gets dressed, which includes preparing a couple grenades, knives, brass knuckles, and two pistols with the Punisher skull on them, just as the man dons a mask with the same skull, the radio broadcast identifies the lone vigilante as the Punisher.

People of the Rogan Board i have returned from the north land and i bring the gift of The Red Star comic series!
http://www.megaupload.com/?f=RAYOWDB8

This comic takes place in an alternate reality. A reality where communism, magic, and big ass fuckin flying warships take place. Possibly one of the best comic series' i have ever read, it has the touching story of how sorceress Maya goes on a quest to save the soul of her husband who was lost to a great battle from the very master who delivered their country from the grip of a tyrannical monarchy only one hundred years before. Lots of interesting artwork is to be found in this comic, a fusion of excellent hand drawn pictures with 3-D rendered images makes this comic truly unique...Enjoy!
Edit*
So its not complete, i have just finished all the comics in the file...granted Demonoid is down are there any good torrent sites still around that have good comic selections?

Lone Wolf 2100
Writter: Mike Kennedy.
Penciler: Francisco Ruiz Velasco.
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

It's a hundred years from now and the world is coming apart. A deadly manmade virus known as the War Spore is spreading, its debilitating effects are felt by man and android alike. Whole populations have become refugees; barred at every border. Human-like android emulation constructs called EmCons, suspected of intentionally releasing the virus, are in revolt. Only a few places on earth remain safe havens from the Spore...

Hiding among the displaced hordes are a man named Itto and a young girl, Daisy. She is the daughter of a renowned scientist who was working on a cure for the virus. He was her father's bodyguard, but now his accused murderer. They're on the run from the operatives of the Cygnat Owari Corporation, men- and machines- who will stop at nothing to kill the man and retrieve the girl. Whether Daisy is an infectious carrier of the virus, as the corporation claims, or something more, as Itto believes, escape is but the first step on their journey, the final destination of which is vengeance...

Writer: Allen Warner
Pencils: Ale Garza
Publisher: Wildstorm/DC Comics

The last in the line of the Mugen Ninja, Nakio must avenge the deaths of his brothers and kill their slayer, the evil Mikaboshi. But with evil assassins following his every step this will prove to be no easy task.

This collection turned out to be a lot more fun than I ever expected. It’s a strange mix of extreme violence and comedic adventure that gels together to form a fast-paced action escapade placed in an Eastern/Japanese fantasy setting.

I highly recommend this one. It's based on the same book as that movie Payback was but the comic stays much more faithful to the novel. This is the complete adaptation of the book but more comics in the series are on the way based on other "Richard Stark" novels. Art is excellent and the story's engaging.

The Hunter, the first book in the Parker series, is the story of a man who hits New York head-on like a shotgun blast to the chest. Betrayed by the woman he loved and double-crossed by his partner in crime, Parker makes his way cross-country with only one thought burning in his mind - to coldly exact his revenge and reclaim what was taken from him! Richard (Donald Westlake) Stark's groundbreaking Parker books are adapted for the first time as a series of graphic novels by Darwyn Cooke. The initial graphic novel brings to life the first Parker book, The Hunter, which introduces readers to the dangerous anti-hero's cold and calculated world of criminals, thugs, and grifters.

Penciler: STEFANO CASELLI
Cover: JIMMY CHEUNG

Nick Fury has assembled the next generation of Marvel super heroes—the sons and daughters of super villains—to fight the new order that Dark Reign has brought to the Marvel Universe! Secret Warriors #1, written by award winning scribe Brian Michael Bendis & rising star Jonathan Hickman and featuring the lush art of Marvel Young Gun artist Stefano Caselli, presents Fury’s battle to not only train the next generation of heroes—but to also defeat what may be the greatest threat he’s ever faced! You’ve seen the Warriors come together in the pages of Mighty Avengers and you’ve seen them push back the Skrull armada Secret Invasion—but what could rock their world even more?

Nick Fury's team of warriors has broken into an old S.H.I.E.L.D. base for recon, where they are met by Hydra. Before they can take the base down, agents of H.A.M.M.E.R. arrive, forcing the team to leave. Back at base, Nick Fury fills Daisy in on some incredible information he garnered on an earlier mission.

Planetary #27 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UBNMTGD3)

If you haven't given it a chance yet, Planetary has a great story on its own, and also serves as a brilliant, if some times heavy-handed, metacriticism of the evolution of comics and the state in which the current "retcon this superhero again and release 17 commemorative covers so the movie can sell more action figures" attitude has put the industry.

Also, it's Warren Ellis at the top of his game. It's funny, it's subversive, and it's dark and ominous and touching and inspiring and thought-provoking and enlightening. This is the kind of shit that makes you almost feel sorry for the people who can't get past the "comics are for kids" stigma.

Just want to say that I absolutely love this thread.

For the XO Manowar fan up there. I have scans of the entire Valiant 1.0 Universe from Magnus to Visitor. Every issue of every series. The entire zip is about 12 gigs. I was going to upload for sharing since I think that the stuff from Unity on back is some of the best super hero comic material ever but I have two issues. First I don't really know where I can host a 12 gig file for free. Second, I have had this up on torrent before, but my IP (Cox) sent me a cease and desist from Acclaim for the Turok issues in the past. They said it was video game materials even though it is just comic scans. Any one interested, and have an idea of where I could post it?

Honestly, this will probably get me in trouble here but I am not a big Garth Ennis fan. I really think he is just trying to constantly outdo his last nasty more than anything. Some of his stories are great, but they are so distracted by the over the top silliness and grotesque. I think by far Ennis best work is the stuff he did on Hellblazer when he was being reigned in by an editor who had a long term stake in the character he was working on.

Ignition City
Writer: Warren Ellis
Penciller: Gianluca Pagliarani
Inker: Chris Drier
Colorist: Digikore Studios
Publisher: Avatar

Ignition City is set in a steampunk alternate history, by the year of 1956, where World War II was interrupted by a Martian invasion. As a result, space travel became commonplace. Ignition City itself is a circular island spaceport, the interior of which is populated by former spacemen. The story follows Mary Raven, a young woman who travels to Ignition City after her father, a formerly famous spaceman named Rock Raven, is killed there

Last batch should be up later today or tomorrow. IMO the best way to read these series is to take the 8 core titles, and put them in the order that they came out in and read the entire line one month at a time. I stop about 2 issues after Unity ends. It just goes downhill from there after they ousted Shooter the whole universe went to crap fast.

I don't think you're going to get much argument from this crowd. Ennis has an unfortunate tendency to lean on the kind of shit most of us left behind at age 12. That having been said, when he's on, you get stuff like Preacher and Hitman and The Boys, and even when he's trying to find some way to lower the bar, he occasionally stumbles across flashes of brilliance like Dogwelder and Arseface.

The Kev stuff is pretty much par for the course in that regard. If you can get past the occasional gratuitous tiger mauling, it's pretty solid work.

Warriors of Plasm
254232

Far from earth is a planet which is also a living organism: the Org of Plasm

The Org must constantly be fed. This is accomplished by conquering new planets. Lorca, the Supreme Acquisitor, leads this mission. Lorca soon sets his sights on Earth.

However, he devises an attempt to overthrow the rulers of Plasm. To do so he genetically modifies five humans. When his rebellion is thwarted, he sends them home. These humans gain super powers and then set themselves in preparation to attempt to defend the Earth from the oncoming alien invasion from Plasm. The humans do not work together, suffering leadership conflicts and the desire to regain their normal lives.

True to a large extent but like Weaselc said, when Garth is on, he's motherfucking ON..

I'm gonna post some slightly less known Ennis books that I just now noticed aren't in the thread already..
If you haven't already read any of these I highly recommend em.

Via Wikipedia:

In early 2009, Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada said the series was put "on hold" after issue 8 (Nov. 2008) because of Straczynski's increased demand as a screenwriter after the success of Changeling, and artist Weston's having taken on conceptual art and storyboarding on a separate film project.[2]

Skreemer is a six-issue limited series, written by Peter Milligan with art by Brett Ewins and Steve Dillon. The first issue appeared in May 1989.

The story is set thirty-eight years after the fall. The central character is Veto Skreemer, an imposing giant in an age when giants are near obsolete. His story is narrated by Peter Finnegan as he looks back on both Veto’s life and how it intersects with the lives of the Finnegan family, contrasting the formers’ rise to power with the latter’s struggle to survive.

The biggest names in comics crime fiction assemble for an anthology of original tales of murder and deceit, presented in glorious black-and-white!

Comics luminaries Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets), Ed Brubaker (Criminal, Sleeper), David Lapham (Stray Bullets), Rick Geary (A Treasury of Victorian Murder), Chris Offutt (HBO's True Blood), and Paul Grist (Kane) show why they're masters of the genre, while newer talents like Jeff Lemire (Essex County), M. K. Perker (Cairo, Air), and Alex de Campi (Smoke) reveal their surprising dark sides. Aided and abetted by some of the most gifted slatherers of thick, black India ink in the field, such as Sean Phillips (Criminal), Eduardo Barreto (Cobb), Dean Motter (Mister X), and more, this gang is headed straight for the bad parts of town, and you're invited along for the ride!

* The latest in Dark Horse's Eisner Award-nominated series of anthologies by top creators!

* Features original work by the greatest writers and artists in crime comics of the modern era!

Ex Machina - by Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris
This is an ongoing creator-owned book - by the guy who wrote Y - The Last Man. It is currently up to issue 34 - and planned for 50 total -- again, it is nice to see creator-driven books with a laid out beginning, middle, and end.

The series shows the life of the world's first and only superhero - both during his past acting as a cape and during the present - which starts a bit after 9/11 when he is elected Mayor of New York City as an independent and lays down the superhero gig.

This series is pretty up-front that it is exploring real-world political/social issues - and overall does a decent job. 9/11 is hit hard, as is gay marriage, pot-smoking, and lots of other stuff.

Good stuff. It just hit a pretty good stopping point so I figure I'd upload the first 34 in a batch - it is at the end of some significant arcs - so you won't feel too bad if you get hooked and have to wait for the last 16.

Alright I found it, downloading it right now. Also found the comic reader software links on 1st post.

I'm aactually envious of anyone reading Transmetropolitan for the first time.
Enjoy

Bah, my quote thing didn't work. Anyhow, thanks for clearing up the mystery for me everyone. Too bad it turns out to be the typical Marvel screw job.

Straczynski has always pulled shit like this. I read Rising Stars from the beginning and the last couple issues were years late because he was fucking around in Hollywood. I remember the last time Marvel didn't come through with a "12" storyline. Poor Cable.

Oh but what an excellent read that was. In fact, I'm gonna read that shit again.

I especially liked the first 6 or 7 issues. His Midnight Nation was pretty good, too.

Indeed. Wanted to strangle the fucker. Now George R.R. Martin is doing it. Problem is, Martin is old and fat and still has like three 1200-page books to crank out before his old, fat self dies of an old, fat heart attack. Asshat.

you da man! great comic, thanks to you for posting it and to whoever recommended it recently.

i'm sure it's not that new of a trend (new to me anyways) but i'm really digging the alternate superhero style comic. this one, irredemable, the boys, supergod, no hero, etc.

19-24 is broken as well. :p
